Georgia's Way (Georgian საქართველოს გზა , Sakartvelos Gsa ) is a center-right - Party in Georgia . Its chairman is the former Georgian Foreign Minister and current President Salome Zurabishvili .

history

The party was officially registered in Tbilisi on March 11, 2006 . On March 12th, an inaugural meeting was held in the Tbilisi Philharmonic, attended by around 2,000 people. The initiator of the establishment was the former Foreign Minister Zurabishvili. The Salome-Zurabishvili movement , founded in November 2005, forms the core of the party.

Principles

The party is in opposition to the government of President Mikheil Saakashvili , whom it accuses of failing to fulfill the promises of the 2003 Rose Revolution . So she turns against traditional clan structures in politics and society, with which civil rights are repeatedly undermined.

Georgia's path calls for a real democracy based on human rights , the rule of law and the separation of powers . Parliament's rights vis-à-vis the government , the independence of the courts and the mass media are to be strengthened. Private entrepreneurship is to be promoted and private property is to be better protected. The hatred widespread in Georgia should be countered and a climate of reconciliation and tolerance should be created. To Abkhazia and South Ossetia are to be built new, peaceful relations. Georgia's foreign policy is to concentrate on accession to the European Union and NATO , at the same time relations of partnership with Russia are to be developed and the aggressive tone towards the northern neighbor is to be ended.

politics

The party wants to distinguish itself from other opposition parties in that it not only criticizes the government, but at the same time presents its own concepts for overcoming political problems. In doing so, she wants to work closely with experts from the Salome Zurabishwilis public movement , which was founded in November 2005 . On July 28, 2006, it was the only opposition party to welcome the controversial police action of the Georgian government in Abkhazia and the establishment of the Abkhaz government-in-exile in the Kodori Gorge, which had previously resided in Tbilisi .

In November 2007, the party joined with the Republican Party of Georgia , the Conservative Party , the Freedom Movement (Tavisupleba) , Our Own Way , the People's Party , the Movement for a United Georgia , the Georgian Troop Party and the National Forum party to form the opposition alliance United National Council together, which nominated Levan Gatchetschiladze as a presidential candidate on November 12th .

trouble

Although the party leader is very respected, Georgia's path has so far not been able to establish itself in the Georgian party system. In the city council elections in Tbilisi on October 5, 2006, only 2.77% of the party's voters cast their vote. In April 2006, 23.1% of Georgians said in an opinion poll published by the weekly newspaper Kwiris Palitra that they would elect Zurabishvili as president.
