United National Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United National Council of the general public movement is a coalition of Georgian opposition parties . Eight political parties belong to it. It turns against the Mikheil Saakashvili government and sparked the mass protests in Georgia from November 2 to 7, 2007.

history

The National Council was established in late September 2007 in response to the arrest of former Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili , which the Georgian opposition regards as evidence of the government's criminal activities. On September 28, he made a joint demonstration in front of the Georgian parliament building in Tbilisi and organized the first mass demonstration on Rustaveli Boulevard on November 2, which was followed by other demonstrations.

On October 17, the National Council adopted a manifesto setting out its political goals. On November 12, the National Council nominated Levan Gatchetschiladze as a joint candidate for the 2008 presidential elections in Georgia and Salome Zurabishvili as Prime Minister of the shadow cabinet . The alliance also wants to enter the Georgian parliamentary elections in May 2008 with a joint list. Gatchechiladze is said to be the top candidate again.

Member parties

Members of the National Council are the Conservative Party , the Georgia Way Party , the Freedom Movement (Tavisupleba) , Our Own Way , the People's Party , the Movement for a United Georgia , the Georgian Troop Party and the National Forum Party . The opposition New Conservative Party ( Novas ) and the Party Industry will save Georgia ( industrialists ) did not join the alliance.

The Imedi party was refused entry because it supported the former Georgian Minister for State Security Igor Giorgadze . The Georgian Labor Party initially worked in the National Council, but left in mid-November after a dispute over a common presidential candidate. The Republican Party of Georgia left the National Council in February 2008 to run its own list in the Georgian parliamentary elections in May of the same year.
