Georgios Pikis

Georgios Pikis ( Greek Γεώργιος Πίκης , often transcribed Georghios Pikis , born  January 22, 1939 in Larnaka ) is a lawyer from Cyprus . He served as a judge from 1981 and from 1995 as President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Cyprus and from 2003 to 2009 as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague .

Life

Georgios Pikis was born in Larnaka in 1939 and completed his legal education at the University of London , where he obtained an LL.B. degree in 1960 . After receiving his barrister -at-law license from the English Bar Association Gray's Inn a year later , he practiced as a lawyer in his home country until 1966 . From 1966 to 1972 he served as a judge and from 1972 to 1981 as president of a district court in the Republic of Cyprus .

From 1981 he worked as a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Cyprus, of which he was President from 1995. In February 2003 he was elected judge at the newly established International Criminal Court , to which he served for a six-year term from 2003 to 2009. He was elected via the list of proposals A for candidates with proven competence in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure law . At the Court of Justice he was on the Appeals Division.

In addition, Georgios Pikis served as an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights in 1993 and 1997 . In addition to his judicial work, he was a member of the UN Committee against Torture from 1996 to 1998 .
