Georgios Serghides

Georgios A. Serghides (born June 28, 1955 in Nicosia ) is a Cypriot lawyer , university professor and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Serghides studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens until he graduated in 1978 . After a job he was with the work written in English "Internal and External Conflict of Laws in Regard to Family Relations in Cyprus" by the University of Exeter in private international law Dr. iur. PhD. This doctorate was followed by three more: in 1998 at the University of Athens with a Greek thesis on an international administrative law topic, in 2007 at the University of Thessaloniki with another Greek thesis on an international family law topic and in 2015 at the Democritus University of Thrace with a comparative constitutional law Job.

In 1985 Serghides was admitted to the bar in Cyprus and subsequently practiced as a lawyer there. In addition, he worked as a lecturer at the private Philips College in Cyprus until 1990. In 1986 he also became a member of the Committee for the Restoration of Human Rights in Cyprus. In 1990 he moved as a judge to the Family Court of Cyprus, of which he became president in 1999. In 2000 he was appointed Liaison Judge Cyprus in the International Hague Network for cases of transnational child abduction. In 2006, in this function, his area of ​​responsibility was expanded to include all family law issues. From 2013 he also acted as the Cypriot liaison judge for asylum matters. In addition to these functions, Serghides was active in numerous committees of the European Union as representative of Cyprus. From 2009 to 2012 he was also a professor at the University of Cyprus . He is also the author of numerous textbooks on Cypriot and international law.

In January 2016, Serghides was elected Judge at the European Court of Human Rights to succeed George Nicolaou as representative of Cyprus . He took up his term of office, which is expected to last until 2025, on April 18, 2016. Since May 7, 2019, he has also been Vice-President of the Third Section of the ECHR.
