George's Church in Kleiningersheim

The Georgskirche Kleiningersheim , built in 1601, is the Protestant parish church of the Ingersheim district of Kleiningersheim.

location

The church is located in the historic center of Kleiningersheim, a little above the castle. Its tower can be seen from afar from the Neckar valley. The church is a cultural monument.

Building history

There was a palace chapel in Kleiningersheim as early as the 11th century. In 1591 the parish, which then had 200 inhabitants, got its own pastor. Then a new church was started. The year 1601 is found both in the keystone of the choir arch and carved into the capitals of the two oak pillars that support the gallery. The two small windows on the north side bear the year 1587 and probably come from the previous church.

In the 18th century the church was painted with frescoes . There is only something left of it in the choir to the left of the altar.

In 1967, the previously windowless choir got a colorful pointed arch window donated by the Ehmer siblings - children of a family who had emigrated from Kleiningersheim to the United States .

building

The main house has an almost square floor plan and a tiled gable roof. The narrow choir tower connects to the east . It is square at the bottom and merges into an octagonal floor plan below the bell chamber. It has high rectangular windows on the upper three floors and is crowned by a slate-covered onion dome. The sacristy is inserted in the southeast corner between the main house and the tower . At the level of the eaves of the main house, a cornice runs around the tower. The bricks on the vertical edges of the otherwise white painted building are set off in ocher yellow; they enliven the building and emphasize its height. The windows on the entire building are set off in the same ocher yellow.

Overall, the building with its clear, closed forms and its characteristic tower has the character of a typical Renaissance church. The pointed arch windows on the ground floor and the pointed arch between the choir and the main house still belong to the Gothic language of form.

Painting in the choir

The fresco to the left of the altar shows the four evangelists Matthew , Mark , Luke and John with their symbols, the little man, lion, bull and eagle. The inscription above reads: "The prophet is not worth anything in his father's city".

The even more faded fresco on the right shows the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. The inscription above reads: "This is my beloved son whom I am well pleased."

The sun, moon and stars are painted in the choir vault. A jagged lightning bolt emanates from one of the passage holes through which the bell ropes used to run. The crown of rays in the middle symbolizes the Holy Spirit .

Other equipment

The oak gallery occupies the rear part of the church. It is supported in the middle by two intricately crafted sinuous columns .

The epitaph by Johann Dietrich Hörner (1652-1724) originally hung in the choir before it was moved to the north side wall. The Kleiningersheimer Schloss was owned by the Hörner family from 1707–1726. Johann Dietrich Hörner was a landscape consultant , that is, he had to give legal advice to the estates and to manage their business. The medallions grouped around the dedication text depict him and his wife as well as his two daughters with their husbands. Horns is probably buried in the choir of the church.

The baptismal font on the left in front of the choir was donated by Johann Dietrich Hörner in 1722. The engraved inscription on top of the stone indicates this.

Others

The church was the location of the SWR television series The Church Remains in the Village from 2012-2013 . In the series it was a Catholic church, for which a confessional and figures of saints were temporarily set up.
