Gerald Frank Else

Gerald Frank Else (born July 1, 1908 in Redfield , † September 6, 1982 in Chapel Hill ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Else studied classics and philosophy at Harvard University and received her doctorate there in 1934 . He taught at Harvard University until he joined the US Marine Corps as a captain in 1943 . After completing his service, he became director of the Classics Department at the University of Iowa in 1945 . In 1954 he went to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he stayed for the remainder of his career. There he headed the Classics department from 1957 to 1968 . During this time he established the Center for the Coordination of Ancient and Modern Studies to unite the humanities and to show the importance of studying the ancient world to modern literature and concerns.

Else worked on ancient poetics , especially the poetics of Aristotle and Plato . Even today his monographic interpretation of the train of thought of Aristotelian poetics is fundamental.

In 1961 Else was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
