Gerald Feinberg

Gerald Feinberg (born May 27, 1933 in New York City , † April 21, 1992 ibid) was an American physicist at Columbia University and a futurologist .

Life

Feinberg studied at Columbia University (Bachelor 1953), where he received his doctorate in 1957 with TD Lee and was in the Faculty of Physics since 1959 and a professor since 1965. In 1960 he became a Sloan Research Fellow . From 1980 to 1982 he was dean of the physics department. In 1956/7 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and 1963/4 at Churchill College, Cambridge University . In 1973/4 he was a Guggenheim Fellow visiting professor at Rockefeller University . He was also a visiting scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and at SLAC .

Feinberg said in 1958 the existence of two neutrino coals ahead (of Myuon neutrinos in addition to the already known electron neutrino), which through experiments of his colleagues at Columbia University Leon M. Lederman , Melvin Schwartz and Jack Steinberger was confirmed 1,962th The three received the Nobel Prize for this.

Feinberg also coined the term tachyons . He also examined other speculative ideas and was u. a. a proponent of cryonics . He was a member of the Foresight Institute .
