Gerardo Budowski

Gerardo Budowski ( June 10, 1925 in Berlin - October 8, 2014 in San José , Costa Rica ) was a German-Venezuelan chess master and scientist.

Life

Gerardo Budowski was born in Berlin to a chess-loving family. His mother played in a simultaneous performance on October 30, 1925 in Berlin against José Raúl Capablanca , his father was friends with Alexander Alekhine . Budowski left Germany after the National Socialists came to power and moved to Paris , where he received chess lessons from Alekhine. During the Second World War he emigrated to Venezuela , where he received citizenship. From 1952 he lived in Costa Rica .

In 1948 he received his bachelor's degree as an agricultural technician from the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, followed by a master’s degree in Turrialba at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA). In 1962 he received a PhD in forest science from Yale University . From 1970 to 1976 he was Director General of the IUCN . In 2008 he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus from the University for Peace.

Gerardo Budowski died of natural causes on October 8, 2014 in San José .

Career

In 1951 Budowski won the Venezuelan championship with a 6-0 victory over Julio García. In the 1950s he took part in several championships in Costa Rica. Budowski won the Costa Rican team championship with Turrialba in 1965. He played for Venezuela at the 1968 Chess Olympiad in Lugano .
