Nicole Dubilier

Nicole Dubilier (born January 16, 1957 in New York City ) is a US-American- German microbiologically working marine biologist , director at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI-MM) and since 2012 biology professor at the University of Bremen .

Life

The daughter of an American businessman and a German mother grew up in Manhattan in New York . At the age of 13, she moved to Germany with her mother and siblings. She could hardly speak German, but learned it quickly. She completed her high school diploma in 1976 at the then unreformed Helene Lange School in Wiesbaden. Due to her enthusiasm for the sea, which has remained unbroken since childhood, she worked alongside her biology studies at the University of Hamburg from 1977 to 1981 as a student research assistant at the Biological Institute Helgoland . That was what made her specialize in marine biology . In 1981 she completed her intermediate diploma in biology and in 1985 her diploma in zoology, biochemistry and microbiology at the University of Hamburg. For her doctoral thesis, she collected and analyzed lugworms and published her research results in the Hamburg dissertation Adaptations of the Marine Oligochaete Tubificoides benedii to Sulfide-rich Sediments: Results from Ecophysiological and Morphological Studies .

As a post-doc , she received an invitation from microbiologist Colleen Cavanaugh to work in her laboratory at Harvard University on the NSF project "Biogeography of Chemoautotrophic Symbioses in Marine Oligochaetes". She sequenced the 16S RNA genes , which serve as phylogenetic markers, in bacteria on gutless sea worms, and was able to prove that these two harbor symbionts. After publishing her post-doc research in 1995, Dubilier returned to Germany with her German husband, an orthopedic surgeon. In 1996 her application to the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology as a scientist in the Molecular Ecology Group was accepted. In 1997 she took parental leave for the birth of her child . From 1997 to 2001 she devoted herself to the DFG project, Evolution of symbioses between chemoautotrophic bacteria and gutless marine worms at the MPI-MM .

From 2001 Dubilier was promoted to group leader and since then has led the Symbiosis research group at MPI-MM. From 2002–2006 she was also the coordinator of the "International Max Planck School of Marine Microbiology". In 2007 she was promoted to a W2 position and henceforth head of the entire symbiosis group at the MPI-MM until 2013. In the winter semester of 2004/2005 she took on a two-month visiting professorship at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris. Since 2012 she has been professor of biology for microbial symbioses at the University of Bremen . She has been director of the MPI-MM since 2013. She organized the June 2015 Gordon Research Conference : Identifying the Common Language of Host-Microbe Associations in Waterville Valley , New Hampshire. The researcher is part of the DFG's Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bremen called MARUM - The Ocean in the Earth System .

Nicole Dubilier is married and lives with her husband and son in Hamburg .
