The Gerber Road is a road of Lübeck .

location

Gerberstraße, which is only around 60 meters long, is located in the northeastern part of the old town island, the Jakobi Quartier . It is a cul-de-sac that branches off from the Langen Lohberg next to the Marien-Schule , diagonally opposite the confluence of the Weiten Lohberg , and ends bluntly in front of a wall.

history

Gerberstraße was only laid out at the end of the 19th century and is therefore one of the younger streets in Lübeck's old town. In its place there was previously a residential corridor that had existed at least since the late 16th century , the name of which was Schumanns Gang (in the counting of the old Lübeck house numbers Langer Lohberg No. 314). Its six gang stalls were demolished after the death of the last owner, the carpenter Johann Friedrich Schumann (* 1760; † January 10, 1832 ) in 1833, after they had been dilapidated for a long time and had been uninhabited since 1823.

The area freed from buildings became part of Hans Joachim Kohlhaase's riding school, which was located behind the houses in Langen Lohberg until it was moved to Moislinger Allee in 1879. After that, the terrain up to the construction of Gerberstrasse and the construction of the new residential buildings on its south side in 1892 lay fallow.

The name, which was officially established at the time of dedication in 1892 and has not changed to this day, refers to the tanners who lived in this part of the city in the Middle Ages and to whose presence the name of the Langen Lohberg goes back.

In keeping with the young age of Gerberstrasse, the only development to be found here is a series of residential buildings built according to a uniform plan from the era of the streets. The buildings only take up the southern side of the street, while the wall of the adjacent school property runs along the northern side.
