Gerd Brunner (born November 29, 1947 in Könderitz ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association. He played there for FC Carl Zeiss Jena and for Vorwärts Stralsund . With Jena, Brunner was twice GDR champion.

Soccer career

Brunner grew up in his place of birth, Koenderitz, located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt near Zeitz . There he started playing soccer in the local company sports club chemistry. As a junior he played for the BSG Chemie in the district town of Zeitz and recommended himself with good performances for the GDR junior national team. There he came to his first junior international match on March 27, 1966, where he was in the team as a left defender together with the later GDR national players Jürgen Sparwasser and Frank Ganzera . Overall, Brunner played five international junior matches as a Zeitzer player. He also successfully completed an apprenticeship as an electrician.

As a selection player, Brunner became interesting for FC Carl Zeiss Jena, the football focus of the region, and so the 1.77 m tall midfielder moved to Jena on April 1, 1967, during the current football season. In the same month, on April 24th, he was used in the league match on the 21st match day Lok Stendal - FC Carl Zeiss (1-0) in the left midfield. In the following season 1967/68 he was already a regular player of the Jenaer with 22 out of 26 possible point games and was able to celebrate his first big success with his team at the end of the season with the championship title. Two years later he was able to repeat this success. In the summer of 1970, he completed three international matches with the GDR youth national team. After Brunner had not played in 18 matchdays between June 1970 and March 1971, he completed his last league game for FC Carl Zeiss Jena on April 17, 1971, the 19th matchday of the season.

In May 1971, Brunner undertook several years of military service, which he performed with the Vorwärts Stralsund Army Sports Association. Whose football team had just been promoted to the league and put Brunner in their ranks from the beginning of the 1971/72 season. In Stralsund, too, Brunner immediately established himself as a regular player, but with his 21 stakes in the game and three goals he couldn't prevent the Stralsund team from being relegated at the end of the season. Brunner played for two years with the army team in the second-rate GDR league , and it wasn't until the summer of 1974 that he returned to the top division.

Since Brunner's military service was over in May 1974, he returned to Jena, but was only used in the second team at FC Carl Zeiss, which played in the GDR league. In view of the lack of prospects, Brunner ended high-performance sport after a year and joined the fourth-class team from Aufbau Jena at the beginning of the 1975/76 season.

In later years Brunner got involved again with FC Carl Zeiss Jena and is currently a member of the supervisory board.
