Gert Oetken (born November 27, 1932 in Rendsburg ; † September 22, 2016 in Heide (Holstein) ) was a German dentist and founder of the Wadden Sea Protection Station .

Life

Gert Oetken, who grew up in Rendsburg , was a member of the German Youth Association for Nature Observation as a teenager . On November 4, 1962, he and others founded the “Naturschutzgesellschaft Schutzstation Wattenmeer” in Großhansdorf near Hamburg. He made one of his waiting rooms available as the association's first office. The first center was the “Bigger-Huus” on Hallig Hooge , from which today's “Wadden Sea House ” emerged. The background to the foundation was the demand of the conservationists to set up a "Watt National Park " in the German Wadden Sea . Oetken contributed politically and scientifically to the establishment of the nature reserves “ North Frisian Outer Sands ” in 1968 and “ North Frisian Wadden Sea ” in 1974. The commitment of Oetken and many other conservationists was successful in the 1980s with the establishment of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park .

For more than 50 years, Oetken was chairman of the Wadden Sea Protection Station, the content of which he shaped. With his initiative, Oetken achieved, among other things, that the Wadden Sea Protection Station was the first private organization in Germany to be able to use community service providers in nature conservation. He did not stand for election at the 2009 general meeting of the Nature Conservation Association. He was succeeded by his deputy, Johann Waller from Burg in Dithmarschen . Gert Oetken was Honorary Chairman of the Wadden Sea Conservation Station from 2009 until his death in 2016.
