Gerda Verburg

Gerritje Verburg , known as Gerda Verburg (born August 19, 1957 in Zwammerdam near Alphen aan den Rijn ) is a Dutch politician of the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA). In the Balkenende IV cabinet she was Minister for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality from 2007 to 2010.

Life

Verburg grew up in an agricultural family. She visited the MAVO and HAVO in Bodegraven and Alphen aan den Rijn . In 1976 she began studying in Kampen . Afterwards she worked as general secretary of the Christian Rural Youth . In 1982 she switched to Christelijk Nationaal Vakverbond . In 1998 she became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the CDA . As a CDA member, she advocated the introduction of same-sex marriage and is the first woman minister in the Dutch parliament to be openly homosexual. From February 22, 2007 to October 14, 2010, Verburg was Minister of Agriculture of the Netherlands. Since July 1, 2011, she has been the Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Rome .

In private, Verburg is very sporty, rides and runs marathons and lives in Woerden with her partner Willy Westerlaken, a childhood friend with whom she has been in a relationship for over 25 years .
