Gerhard Budin

Gerhard Budin (* 1961 in Vienna ) is a university professor for translational terminology and translation technology at the University of Vienna , Center for Translation Studies .

biography

In the 1980s Budin studied translation studies , philosophy of science , philosophy , computer science and economics in Vienna and Barcelona . In 1988 he completed his studies with a doctorate in linguistics . In the 1990s he was a research assistant in several institutions, including from 1990 to 1996 at the International Information Center for Terminology (Infoterm) at the Austrian Standardization Institute . In 1997 he completed his habilitation at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting and at the Institute for Philosophy of Science and Science Research at the University of Vienna. From 1996 to 2004, Budin was a research assistant at the University of Vienna, and since January 1, 2005, he has been a university professor for translational terminology and translation technology there. From March 2010 to the end of 2013 Budin was also director of the Institute for Corpus Linguistics and Text Technology (ICLTT) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) .

Teaching

Since 1989, Budin has been teaching terminology, translation technology, specialist language research, information science and applied philosophy of science at the University of Vienna. He was visiting professor at the University of Limoges (1997–1998) and at the University of Paris VII (2002) and has been a visiting professor at Danube University Krems since 2001 . Budin has been giving guest lectures, seminars and courses at universities and research institutions around the world since the early 1990s. Since his habilitation, he has supervised a number of master's theses (around 400) and doctoral theses (15 completed, 15 ongoing).

The main topics of Budin's research include cognitive and linguistic structures of specialist terminology, language technologies as working instruments of the international language industry and as research methods in the digital humanities as well as the development of multilingual specialist communication.

In the past 25 years, Budin has been active in the following research areas within the framework of Austrian, European and international research projects:

His main activity at the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna is the "Translation - Cognition - Technologies" project, which forms part of the transdisciplinary research platform "Cognitive Science" at the University of Vienna.

  • Corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since April 15, 2011)
