Gerhard Chroust (born April 23, 1941 in Vienna ) is an Austrian computer scientist and emeritus professor at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz . His main research topics are arithmetic expressions, the programming language PL / I , micro- programming , process models for software development, human factors and localization.

Life

Gerhard Chroust studied communications engineering at the Technical University of Vienna from 1959 . In the course of modern computing , he came into contact with an IBM 650 computer. He made his first contacts with the then university lecturer Heinz Zemanek . He completed his diploma thesis entitled Cybernetic Model: Mühlespiel in 1964. He then studied at the University of Pennsylvania (Computer Science). He completed his studies there in 1965 with a master's thesis on A Heuristic Derivation Seeker for Uniform Prefix Languages .

From 1966 he worked in the IBM laboratory in Vienna; this remained his professional home until 1991. Here he contributed to the creation of the Vienna Definition Language (VDL). This description language was created for the formal description of the semantics of the PL / I programming language .

During 1972–76, Chroust was Heinz Zemanek's personal assistant . During this time the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) was founded, of which Chroust was a founding member.

In 1974 Chroust helped to organize an IBM / 370 computer for the PL / I teaching in the computer science course at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU). From 1975 he was also involved in teaching and research at the university. In 1979 , Chroust completed his habilitation with a thesis on microprogramming as a tool in practical computer science .

Other areas of work were micro-programming, PL / I compilers for the IBM 8100, and the creation of a process model for software development for IBM's software engineering environment ADPS.

He was appointed university professor at the JKU in 1992. Chroust became head of the department for System Engineering and Automation at the Institute for Systems Sciences under Professor Franz Pichler . In 2004 the department was converted into an independent institute. Chroust remained the director of the institute until his retirement in October 2007. He was succeeded by Alexander Egyed .

Furthermore, Chroust has been organizing the annual IDIMT conferences in the Czech Republic since 1993 and the one-week specialist discussions 'Fuschl Conversations' every other year.

Organizations

Chroust is the committee chair of the OCG series and a member of the extended executive committee. He is President of the Austrian Society for Computer Science, a branch of the OCG, and Vice President of the Austrian Study Society for Cybernetics (ÖSGK) and General Secretary of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR).

family

Gerhard Chroust has been with Janie Chroust, geb. Weps, married. They have two adult sons Martin (* 1971) and Stefan (* 1974), and five grandchildren Adrian (* 2001), Niklas (* 2004), Viktoria (* 2005), Rebecca (* 2007) and Ella (* 2008).
