Gerhard Deiss

Gerhard Deiss (born December 30, 1950 in Vienna ) is a retired Austrian diplomat . From 2003 to 2007 he was Austrian Ambassador to Morocco , co-accredited to Mauritania , and from 2010 to 2015 Ambassador to Senegal with responsibility for eight other West African countries. He has also appeared as a book author and since 2015 as a composer.

Life

education

Deiss graduated in 1968 at the Theresianum in Vienna and studied until 1972 at the University of Vienna Law . His doctorate as Dr. jur. took place in December 1972. After military service and court year, he attended the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna from 1974 to 1976. From 1968 to 1970 Deiss also studied music theory and composition with Friedrich Neumann at the then Vienna Music Academy (today's University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ) .

Diplomatic career

After joining the Austrian Foreign Service, Deiss worked in the international law office from 1976 to 1979. In 1979 he moved to the then Austrian mission to the European Communities in Brussels, from 1983 to 1986 he was deputy head of mission at the Austrian embassy in Berlin (responsible for the then GDR). He worked in the General Secretariat of the Austrian Foreign Ministry from 1986 to 1990, where he was deputy head from 1988. This was followed by stays abroad from 1990 to 1994 at the embassy in New Delhi and from 1994 to 1997 at the embassy in Budapest , each in the role of deputy head of mission . After returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna, from 1997 to 2003 he headed the department for the EU internal market and coordinated the affairs of the Committee of Permanent Representatives I in Brussels.

In 2003 he was appointed Austrian ambassador in Rabat (Morocco). Between 2007 and 2010 he headed the department for general legal and consular matters in Vienna before he took up his post as Austrian ambassador in Dakar (Senegal) in 2010. He held this post until March 2015, after which he retired.

Private

Gerhard Deiss has been married to Claudia Deiss-Lessiak since 1978. He has two daughters.
