Coaching career

After the GDR soccer champion SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt landed on a relegation zone under his coach Günter Horst on the 16th matchday of the 1958 season , in September 1958 the 31-year-old Gerhard Hofmann, previously unknown in higher-class GDR soccer, took over the training League team. He managed to lead the team to fourth place at the end of the season. In the following season he helped SC Wismut to its second championship. In the 1958/59 European Cup , SC Wismut made it to the quarter-finals under Hofmann. In 1960 he was replaced by Manfred Fuchs after the 13th matchday, although his team was fourth in the league table after a 3-0 win over SC Progress Weissenfels .

For seven years Hofmann was not represented in the two highest football leagues in the GDR. In the meantime, GDR football had returned to summer-spring game operations and the players of SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt had competed as the Wismut Aue company sports community (BSG) since 1963 . Wismut Aue had fallen back on the 9th match day of the 1967/68 season after a 1: 2 home defeat against FC Vorwärts Berlin to the last place in the league table. Thereupon the previous trainer Bringfried Müller was replaced by Gerhard Hofmann. Under his leadership the BSG Wismut started with three victories in a row and fought for a safe eleventh place by the end of the season. Aue also managed to stay in the league in the following three seasons and achieved seventh place in 1970, the best position since 1966.

For the 1971/72 season Hofmann moved to the regional football performance center and league rivals FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. This was immediately promoted back to the league after his descent in 1970. Hofmann also initially helped FCK to stay in the league and achieved secure midfield positions in 1972/73 and 1973/74. After the end of the first half of the season 1974/75 Gerhard Hofmann left the ninth place FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and ended his career in higher-class football.

He later worked as a sports teacher at the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt .
