Gerhard Kauffmann

Gerhard Kauffmann (born June 29, 1887 in Berlin-Mariendorf ; † June 16, 1969 in Berlin ) was a German officer , last lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Kauffmann's mother Anna Hepp was the illegitimate daughter of Hermann von Pückler-Muskau . He joined the 68th Infantry Regiment in 1908 and served as an orderly officer and adjutant during the First World War . After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr . There he was a commander in various infantry regiments. At the end of 1928 he moved to the Army Personnel Office and became group leader there. In 1935 he became commander of the 59th Infantry Regiment and then in the same position of the 73rd Infantry Regiment.

In mid-1937 he was appointed head of the Office Group Replacement and Army (AG E / H) in the OKH . He then became commander of the 256th Infantry Division from January 1940 to January 1942 . In April 1941 he was promoted to the position of lieutenant general. On July 9, 1941, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross .

With the division he took part in the Battle of Moscow and the Battle of Rzhev . His division was enclosed in Mologino and reduced to regimental strength. What followed was e.g. T. Refusal of orders by the remaining soldiers. In mid-January 1942 he was transferred to the Führerreserve .
