Gerhard Kugler (2007)

Gerhard Kugler (born May 4, 1935 in Bodenbach ; † November 3, 2009 ) was one of the German air rescue pioneers . He was best known as the long-time managing director of ADAC air rescue , book author and caricaturist .

Services

For more than 40 years, Kugler has initiated, directed and designed the fate of emergency aid and air rescue not only in the automobile club ADAC , but also in Germany and made it known all over the world. With commitment, he built up air rescue as part of the ADAC: from 1 to 22 air rescue bases of the ADAC.

Life

Gerhard Kugler was born in Bodenbach (Sudetenland) in 1935. Here, Kugler was already fascinated by “model flying” with flight experiments on the “Schäferwand” behind his parents' house. At the age of 10, Kugler was expelled with his family in 1945 and came to Bernburg (Saxony-Anhalt) via a reception camp . Kugler graduated from the Carolinum / Karl-Marx-Oberschule in Bernburg in 1954. After graduating from high school, he began an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk. In 1956 he fled to West Germany, came to Düsseldorf via a reception camp in West Berlin and Sandbostel (work in a paint factory) and then to Munich. In 1976 Kugler moved to Geretsried with his wife Renate and their three daughters .

Professional career at ADAC

Since 1957 Kugler worked for the ADAC, first as a clerk in the traffic department "Road Information", from August 1, 1971 he switched to the ADAC department for "Traffic Education and Awareness (VEA)" and took over the responsibility as department head "Accident Rescue" . In 1973 Kugler went to Bonn for the ADAC to organize the “liaison office of the automobile club” in the federal capital. In 1974 he became provisional managing director of the ADAC-Gau Württemberg.

From 1977 Kugler turned back to traffic medicine and air rescue and on June 15, 1982 he became an authorized signatory and head of the air rescue department at ADAC air rescue. From 1990 until his retirement in 2000, Kugler was managing director of the non-profit ADAC-Luftrettung GmbH.

EHAC

On February 25, 2000, Kugler founded the “European HEMS and Air Rescue Committee e. V. (EHAC) ", renamed on April 21, 2004 to" European HEMS and Air Ambulance Committee e. V. (EHAC) ”and was president of the association until June 20, 2005. As the founding and later honorary president of the EHAC, Kugler represented the interests of air rescue on a national, but above all on an international level.

Kugler as an artist

Kugler discovered his inclination for painting and drawing as a student at the grammar school in Bernburg (Saale) while caricaturing teachers and classmates. Kugler's artistic focus was on watercolor painting with the main theme of landscapes. He got started with landscape watercolors in the mid-1980s; a first exhibition in 1990 in the old town hall in Bad Tölz encouraged him to focus on mountain painting in particular. Watercolor painting excursions can also be seen in posthumously published Kugler calendar editions. Although self-taught, Kugler was not a Sunday painter, but a serious artist. He was able to deal with color and subject with an almost dreamlike ease. Anyone who has ever seen his pictures was impressed by their cheerfulness; a joy that was ultimately part of his personality.

With the publication of the book “ ADACOPTER - Auf -zeichnung einer Entwicklung ” (2002), Kugler succeeded in combining his passion as a protagonist and pioneer of air rescue with artistic means of expression as a caricaturist in a cheerful professional retrospect with 155 caricatures. His memoirs “ ADACOPTER-2, Recollections ” were almost finished in 2009 until his death and were published posthumously in 2010 for the 40th anniversary of ADAC air rescue with 82 caricatures.

Bo 105

When he retired in 2000, Kugler received a restored Bo 105 airframe with the historical identification D-HILF from Eurocopter . He donated it to the Deutsches Museum, where it has been part of the “Modern Transport Systems” exhibition in the traffic center on Theresienhöhe since October 2006.
