Gerhard Mitscherlich
Gerhard Mitscherlich (born April 21, 1911 in Königsberg ; † August 25, 2007 ) was a German forest scientist .
Life and career
The son of the crop scientist and soil scientist Eilhard Alfred Mitscherlich studied forest sciences at the universities of Eberswalde and Tharandt . He received his doctorate in Eberswalde in 1939 and completed his habilitation there in 1943.
In 1946 Mitscherlich became forester in the Braunschweig forestry office in Lutter am Barenberge .
In 1950 he was offered the chair for forestry yield science at the University of Freiburg , where he was also appointed head of the Baden Forest Research Institute .
His main areas of research were forest yield science and the ecology of forest growth. After the death of Heinz Loßnitzer Mitscherlich was temporarily also acting head of the Meteorological Institute of the University of Freiburg. He used the institute's staff for his earnings-related work in the Freiburg area, so that the technicians of the Meteorological Institute became familiar with the particularities of forest meteorological measurements.
1963 to 1964 he held the office of rector of the University of Freiburg. Mitscherlich retired in 1977.
His brother was the veterinarian Eilhard Mitscherlich (1913–2002).
