Gerhard Pelzl

Gerhard Pelzl (* 1939 ) is a German chemist , university professor and former basketball player .

Life

Pelzl studied chemistry from 1958 to 1964 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , in 1969 he completed his doctoral thesis there with Horst Sackmann (subject: "On birefringence and polymorphism of crystalline liquids") and in 1987 his habilitation . From 1992 until his retirement, he held a professorship for physical chemistry at the University of Halle . The main focus of his scientific work included the structure elucidation and the investigation of thermotropic liquid-crystalline systems. In 2017 he was awarded the Alfred Saupe Medal for his life's work by the German Liquid Crystal Society.

basketball

Pelzl, whose wife Gisela , whom he married in 1966, was also a basketball player, played for SC Chemie Halle , was basketball champion of the German Democratic Republic with the team and took part in European Cup games. He received 17 appointments in the GDR men's national team and entered the selection  tournament for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Bologna , Italy  . Even at retirement age he took part in basketball competitions, including the national best games in the age group 65+.
