Gerhard Scherhorn (born February 21, 1930 in Hanover ; † February 28, 2018 ) was a German economist .

Career

Gerhard Scherhorn was the son of the future colonel Heinrich Scherhorn . After an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Hanover, Scherhorn studied at the University of Cologne and was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD. After his habilitation ( economic political sciences ) in Cologne in 1966, he took up teaching and research in Cologne, Hamburg and Stuttgart . He became rector of the Hamburg University of Economics and Politics . Until his retirement in 1998 he was professor for consumer theory and consumer policy at the University of Hohenheim . In 1996 he was a founding member of the Association for Ecological Economy , on whose board he was active until his death. As a founding member of the Sustainable Economy Network, he was also involved in the development of the sustainable economy concept from 2009. Until his death he was co-editor of the yearbook Sustainable Economy.

From 1996 to 2003 he was director of the working group “New Wealth Models” at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy , then until 2005 he was head of the research group “Sustainable Production and Consumption”, also at the Wuppertal Institute.

In 2010, Scherhorn, in charge of the Ethical-Ecological Rating project group, published the appeal “Sustainable development needs laws for sustainable competition!”. The group has set itself the goal of "convincing civil society, business and politics that the competitive order hinders sustainable development as long as it allows the pursuit of competitive advantages that result from the passing on of costs to the environment and society."

Scherhorn died at the end of February 2018 at the age of 88.
