Gerhard Schmidt-Henkel (born July 9, 1925 in Rostock ; † September 11, 2011 in Homburg / Saar) was a German specialist in German .

Life

Schmidt-Henkel studied German, history, art history and philosophy at the University of Greifswald (diploma 1951) and received his doctorate in 1955 from the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on Ernst Barlach . After working as an assistant at the Technical University of Berlin with Paul Altenberg and Walter Höllerer , he completed his habilitation in 1967 with a thesis on "Myth and Poetry" and was appointed professor in the same year. In March 1971 he was appointed full professor at the Free University of Berlin. On November 1, 1971, he took over the chair for modern German philology and literary studies at Saarland University , which he held until his retirement in 1993. He also took on several guest professorships abroad .

Gerhard Schmidt-Henkel had been married since 1958 and had two sons; the older is the literary translator Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel .

In 1978 Schmidt-Henkel founded the "Laboratory for Gustav-Regulator Research" at Saarland University. a. the Gustav Regulator edition emerged . The office was expanded in 1985 to an "archive for the literatures of the Saar-Lor-Lux-Alsace border regions", which formed the nucleus of today's Saar-Lor-Lux-Alsace literature archive . Schmidt-Henkel was a founding member of the » Literary Colloquium Berlin « established by Walter Höllerer and belonged to the » Fritz Reuter Society «, whose honorary letter he was awarded in 2003. Numerous publications and three festival publications dedicated to him document his broad field of research, which is devoted to, among others, Gustav Regulator, Fritz Reuter , the literature of the border regions, the literature of the 20th century and the trivial literature .
