Gerhard Schultze-Werninghaus

Gerhard Schultze-Werninghaus (born May 16, 1945 in Hamburg ) is an internist, pulmonologist and allergist. Most recently he was director of the Clinic for Pneumology, Allergology, Sleep and Respiratory Medicine at the Bergmannsheil University Clinic in Bochum. He retired on August 30, 2010.

Life

Gerhard Schultze-Werninghaus was born in Hamburg in 1945. He studied medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1965 to 1970 and then became a medical assistant at the Freiburg University Clinic. In 1972 Schultze-Werninghaus received his license to practice medicine and completed his doctorate in the same year. After a brief activity as an assistant doctor in the Asthma Clinic Bad Lippspringe , he moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt am Main in 1973 . In 1982 he was appointed senior physician here and in 1990 managing senior physician of the Center for Internal Medicine. In the meantime he completed his habilitation and in 1991 received an extraordinary professorship at the University of Frankfurt am Main. In the same year he went to Bergmannsheil in Bochum, which is part of the University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum (UK RUB). Here he became head physician in the Department of Pneumology , Allergology and Sleep Medicine . After a restructuring in 2003, this was appointed as an independent clinic and Schultze-Werninghaus as director. Today it is called the Clinic for Pneumology, Allergology, Sleep Medicine and Ventilation Medicine.

Scientifically, the lung specialist dealt with silicosis ("dust lung "), the causes of bronchial asthma as well as with questions of sleep and ventilation medicine. In 1998 he set up a clinical research group of the BMBF at Bergmannsheil. It later went to the Department of Experimental Pneumology at the Ruhr University Bochum (Head: Albrecht Bufe). Gerhard Schultze-Werninghaus resigned from his active service in Bergmannsheil on August 30, 2010 and was retired.

Honors / functions

In 1984, Schultze-Werninghaus received the Karl Hansen Prize of the German Society for Allergy and Immunity Research.

In 2010 he was awarded the Erich Fuchs Prize from the Association of German Allergologists. V. honored for its services to German allergology.

In addition, Schultze-Werninghaus has held several functions in various specialist societies, including as President of the German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology, as a board member of the German Society for Pneumology and as a founding member and president of the West German Society for Pneumology.

Publications

Schultze-Werninghaus has published numerous books and specialist articles. The pubmed database lists over 200 specialist publications in which he is an author.
