In his books, Schweppenhäuser dealt primarily with the explicit and implicit contributions of critical theory to the discourse of ethics. His dissertation presented Adorno's negative moral philosophy (1993; 2016); it includes material from the Frankfurt Adorno archive, some of which has not yet been published. The habilitation thesis ( Die Antinomie des Universalismus , 2005) contains a critical reconstruction of the moral-philosophical discourse from Kant to Habermas and Rorty. In other writings Schweppenhäuser discusses topics of mass culture. He occasionally undertakes excursions into the realms of systems theory and cultural studies ( “Naddel” defended against their lovers, 2004). Method pluralism also characterizes his book Aesthetics. Philosophical foundations and key terms from 2007, the classic and newer concepts of aesthetics and the like. a. with a view to their application in various areas of design. In the last few years Schweppenhäuser has presented studies on topics of design theory and questions of ethics in design.

Ulrich Müller wrote in the Philosophical Yearbook : “Schweppenhäuser [...] shows [...] how elements of critical theory can be linked to one another in such a way that they expose the conditions for the possibility of a critical social theory today. His explanations rely on the power of reasoning that never lapses into abstract formalism: They start with current debates and problems and work with concrete descriptions of phenomena. Your enlightenment intention is also expressed in discursive and unpretentious language. […] Gerhard Schweppenhäuser showed the 'critical theory' […] a partly new, but in any case good and feasible path. "

Schweppenhauser's book Critical Theory , which was published by Reclam-Verlag in 2010, said in the Wissenschaftlicher Literaturanzeiger that it was “a differentiated book that depicts a broad spectrum of viewpoints and takes critical theory into account in its historical development. It is written fluently, has a high level of argumentation and is equally suitable for first-year students and interested laypeople. "
