Gerhard Friedrich Paul Georg Wilhelm von Haniel , also Haniel-Niethammer, (born September 19, 1888 in Saarburg , Alsace-Lorraine , † February 22, 1955 in Munich ) was a German painter, influenced by French Impressionism . His focus was on landscape and cityscape painting ( vedute ), but he also painted still lifes, nudes and portraits.

Live and act

He was the eldest of three children of Lieutenant Eugen Gustav Heinrich von Haniel-Niethammer (1852-1935) and his wife Alma Maria Adolfine Paula Freiin von Niethammer (1864-1942), heiress of Tunzenberg Castle . One of his brothers was the CSU politician Fritz von Haniel-Niethammer . Even at a very young age, Gerhard's artistic talent, which was encouraged by his parents, showed. After graduating from high school in Cologne, Gerhard von Haniel went to Munich and later to Berlin. In the latter city he received drawing and painting lessons from the former court painter of the Romanian royal family, Dora Hitz . In 1907 he briefly studied with Lovis Corinth , who ran a private painting school in Berlin. A year later, Gerhard moved from Haniel to Munich, where he briefly studied at the local academy . From 1928 to 1935 he lived in Paris. There he received important impulses from Henri Matisse . Long study trips took him to Spain and Italy.

In the mid-1930s he moved to Munich and later moved to Tegernsee. The artist died as a result of an operation that was not dangerous in itself.

Artistic work

Especially the colors, which sometimes appear wild in his work, but also the firmness of the forms, the structure of the lines and the spatial layering of the bodies were conveyed by France .
Even in the landscapes, a baroque line is sometimes noticeable in the brushwork on trees and clouds, sometimes contradicting the atmosphere. But it only becomes tangible in the still lifes, portraits and figurative compositions. The color here becomes more dominant, daring, almost expressive; a deep purple, blue and yellow against a dark background. Of course, it is not always able to bind isolated things; but the best pieces come close to the French late impressionists .
