Gerlach Flicke , also Garlick or Garlicke Flicke (* in Osnabrück ; † January / February 1558 in London ) was a German painter of the Tudor period . He had his creative time in the generation after Hans Holbein the Younger and, like him, worked in England.

life and work

Little is known about Gerlach Flicke's life. From the fact that he identified himself as a German on two signed portraits and that he bequeathed his property in Osnabrück to a domestic worker in his will, it is generally concluded that he came from this city. However, his date of birth has not been recorded. His work as a portrait painter in England has been documented since 1545/46 . In 1554, a stay in prison (presumably in the Tower of London ) is documented, where his self-portrait (as a diptych together with the also incarcerated pirate Henry Strangwish ) was created. This painting is considered the first oil painting self-portrait in England. The reason for Flicke's imprisonment and the length of it are unknown. Possibly he was a victim of the persecution of Protestants under Queen Maria I. Flicke's most famous painting is certainly the portrait of Thomas Cranmer , Archbishop of Canterbury from 1545. The fact that Flicke was allowed to portray such a prominent cleric suggests that he was was highly regarded as an artist. Another portrait, signed in 1547, shows an unknown nobleman. At least three other portraits were painted by Flicke, that of Queen Mary I (now in the Durham Cathedral Library), one of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and the portrait of Thomas, first Lord Darcy of Chiche (most recently documented in 1848 at Irnham Hall in Lincolnshire , missing since 1854). The few surviving pictures by Flicke show a high artistic level that is comparable to that of Hans Holbein the Younger. His will is dated January 24, 1558.
