Gernot Schulz

Gernot Schulz (born February 22, 1952 in Stuttgart ) is a German conductor and music teacher.

Career

After studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg, Schulz began as a 22-year-old drummer with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and stayed there until 2004. Making music under Herbert von Karajan shaped him and was decisive for his further musical career. In the 1980s he began conducting alongside his orchestral work and studied with Volker Rohde at the Leipzig University of Music . This was followed by master classes in Vienna and Salzburg and an invitation from Leonard Bernstein to Tanglewood . The latter, along with Sir Georg Solti, was one of his greatest patrons, for whom he conducted rehearsals with the Orchestra of the Milan Scala, the Orchestra of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia di Roma. From 1995 to 1999 he took over the management of the International Summer Academy in Michaelstein Monastery . Together with Manfred Harnischfeger, he founded the company "Dirigieren &führung" in 2008.

Schulz stepped u. a. with the Chamber Orchestra of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Munich Radio Orchestra , the Orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin , the Staatskapelle Weimar , the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt , the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra , the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra , the orchestra of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Eugene Symphony Orchestra (USA), the Budapest Philharmonic , the Czech National Orchestra , the National Orchestra of Taiwan , the radio Symphony Orchestra Ljubljana , the Latvian National Orchestra Riga , the Orquestra Simfònica de Baleares and the Noord Nederlands Orkest on. At the counterpoint festival of the Salzburg Easter Festival initiated by Claudio Abbado , Gernot Schulz conducted various ensembles of the Berliner Philharmoniker, with whom he has been working regularly ever since.

Schulz has made guest appearances at the Frankfurter Festen , the Berliner Festwochen, among others with world premieres by Hans Werner Henze , Wilhelm Killmayer , Günter Bialas and Peter Michael Hamel , the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival . In the 2006/2007 season Gernot Schulz u. a. with the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, the Staatskapelle Weimar and the Nuremberg Philharmonic .

Recordings

In addition to Sir Simon Rattle and the Philharmonic, Gernot Schulz was also involved in the production of the first CD of the newly founded Berliner Philharmoniker's label, recording the music for the film Rhythm Is It! involved. He recorded the music for the ZDF two-parter Die Rosenzüchterin , also composed by Karim Sebastian Elias and awarded the Rolf-Hans Müller Prize for Film Music , with the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt ; the CD was released in 2004 by Sony Classical. Further CD recordings, including the opera fragment Adrast by Franz Schubert , have been published by Ars Produktion and Wergo in recent years.

Honors

In 1996 Gernot Schulz was a prizewinner at the conducting competition of the German music academies in Munich.
