Beatrice Shaye is arrested by the police in her rose garden because she is said to have murdered her mother Helene Feldmann. In her defense, she wants to use her son Alan, who, however, doubts his mother's innocence himself. He researches his family and finds out that his mother killed her great love Erich Feldmann to protect the prisoner of war Julien. Helene once covered Beatrice's deed because she was unhappily married to Erich. Alan wonders if she wanted to break her silence and so his mother became a murderer again.

The rose breeder was filmed from October 18, 2003 to December 22, 2003 on the British Channel Island of Guernsey and in South Africa . The film was produced by Ziegler Film GmbH & Co. KG and Two Oceans Production. The two -parter was first broadcast on November 7, 2004 as The Great ZDF Sunday Film.
