Gerald "Gerry" Humphreys (born January 14, 1946 in Llandudno ) is a former Welsh football player . Mostly used as a winger , the five-time U-23 selection player was in the extended squad of Everton FC , which won the English championship in 1970 . A real sporting breakthrough was denied to him there and only in the further course of the 1970s did he become a regular at the fourth division club Crewe Alexandra .
Athletic career
The active career of Humphreys, born in the far north of Wales, began in 1963 east of the nearby Welsh-English border in Liverpool with Everton FC . After initial assignments in the reserve team, he played two first division games in the senior team for the first time in the 1965/66 season. His debut on April 16, 1966 against Leeds United (1: 4) was part of a controversy, as coach Harry Catterick his "B-team" and consequently none of the eleven regular players a week before the important FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United sent to the field. His second appearance on the last day of the match against Leicester City - ten days before the cup final - was under similar circumstances , in which Catterick accepted the next clear defeat (0: 3) approvingly without three regular players. He had to wait a long time for the next appearance and after further appearances in less sporty games in the spring of 1968, he represented regular player Jimmy Husband for four games in a row from the end of October 1968 . In two other meetings in the 1968/69 season he achieved the only two first division goals in his career. In the championship season 1969/70 completed Humphreys only against Manchester City (1: 0) for Johnny Morrissey a league match for Everton on the left wing position before the now five times the Welsh under-23 national team in June 1970 to London to rivals Crystal Palace drew .
The desired breakthrough did not materialize for him with “Palace” either. In eleven league appearances in the 1970/71 season, Humphreys was only four times in the starting line-up. He was not allowed to score a goal and before the end of the season he moved back to the north of England in the fourth division to Crewe Alexandra in January 1971 . Great sporting successes were rare there and promotion in particular was out of reach, but until 1977 he was mostly a fixture in the team with 193 league appearances. He recorded his best scoring in the 1972/73 season with a total of eleven goals. After the end of his professional career, Humphreys returned to his Welsh homeland to end his active career at clubs like Rhyl FC .
