Gertrude of Saxony (1030–1113)

Gertrud von Sachsen (* around 1030 in Schweinfurt , † August 4, 1113 in Veurne ) was Countess of Holland by marrying Florens I, Count of Holland, and Countess of Flanders by marrying Robert I, Count of Flanders. Between 1061 and 1067 she was regent of Holland for her son Dietrich V and regent of Flanders between 1086 and 1093 during her husband's absence. She is also known as Gertrud Billung after her great-grandfather Hermann Billung .

Life

Gertrud was born as the daughter of Bernhard II, Duke of Saxony and Eilika of Schweinfurt .

Countess of Holland

Around 1050 Gertrud married Florens I, Count of Holland (around 1017–28 June 1061). After the death of her husband she was Dietrich V . Count of Holland . Since he was still a minor, she became regent.

Wilhelm I, Bishop of Utrecht took the opportunity to occupy parts of Holland . In 1064 Wilhelm was granted part of the count's rights. Gertrud and her son moved to the islands of Friesland .

Countess of Flanders

In 1063 Gertrud married Count Robert I of Flanders , the second son of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders . Then Robert was regent of Holland.

In 1071 she became Countess of Flanders after the death of her father-in-law, which she remained until her husband's death in 1091.

While her husband was on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem between 1086 and 1093, Gertrud was regent of Flanders.

With her husband Florens I, Count of Holland , she had seven children:

  7. Adela (* around 1061), married to Count Baudouin I of Guînes

She and her second husband Robert I of Flanders had five children:

  1. Robert (around 1065–5 October 1111), Count of Flanders
  2. Adela († 1115), her first marriage to Canute IV of Denmark , was mother to Charles I of Flanders , and her second marriage to Roger Borsa , Duke of Apulia .
  3. Gertrude, married to Dietrich II of Lorraine , was the mother of Dietrich of Alsace , Count of Flanders.
  4. Philip von Loo, whose illegitimate son William of Ypres, 1st Earl of Kent , claimed the county of Flanders
