Gertrud Steinl (born on March 17, 1922 in Graslitz / Kraslice , died on March 16, 2020 in Nuremberg ) was the last Righteous Among the Nations still alive in Germany .

Gertrud Steinl was a foreman in the Polish city of Stryj in 1943 when one of her employees, Sarah Shlomi (née Fröhlich), confided that she was Jewish. In order to protect her from National Socialist persecution , Steinl hid her in her parents' house in Graslitz, where she was able to survive until the end of the war as a housemaid and later as a worker in a munitions factory.

In 1979 the Yad Vashem Memorial honored Ms. Steinl as Righteous Among the Nations for her deed . In addition, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2019 . She died on March 16, 2020, the day before her 98th birthday. The German-Israeli Society indicates in its obituary notice that Steinl was the last righteous among the peoples in Germany.
