Gerung (bishop)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerung († November 20, 1170 in the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Petersberg near Halle ) was abbot of the Bosau monastery and from 1152 to 1170 Bishop of Meissen . The contract he signed with the Flemish settlers in Kühren in 1154 is famous .

Under Gerung, Duke Vladislav II invaded the country due to border disputes with the Margraviate of Meißen and wreaked havoc. As the Bohemian king, he would later compensate Gerung for it. In 1160 Gerung took part in a princes' day in Erfurt along with other bishops , discussing the suppression of the uprising in Milan that had broken out against Emperor Friedrich I. In 1163 Gerung held court with the emperor over the murderers of Arnold von Selenhofen in Mainz, which had serious consequences for the city as some rights were withdrawn from it. Gerung fell seriously ill during a visit to the Petersberg monastery and died there. His body was transferred to the Meissen Cathedral .
