Stories Behind Forgotten Walls is a documentary by Enno Seifried that deals with Lost Places in Leipzig .

action

Whether close to the center or in the outskirts, in and around Leipzig you can marvel at countless architecturally impressive buildings that have been empty for 20 years and more and are waiting to be demolished or reused. In search of an environment that is not in any travel guide and yet tells more of the past of a region than many a history book, the documentary film trilogy embarks on the trail of so-called lost places in and around Leipzig. On the trail of the stories behind forgotten walls.

content

“Stories Behind Forgotten Walls” deals with the past, present and future of the most fascinating lost place locations in and around Leipzig. A narrator who, as a visitor to Leipzig, guides through the film with her own personal gaze, complements statements and memories from contemporary witnesses as well as statements from investors, visionaries and politicians. Stories of the former Combine Director Dr. Lothar Poppe, Walther Ulbricht's visits to the former Hotel Astoria or Arthur Schnitzler's preferences are also part of the documentary film series, as are visions of the planned new uses of the former bowling club as a natural history museum or the old post station as an alternative culture and flea market.

In addition, there are numerous interviewees who call themselves so-called ruin romanticists. This group of people has developed a fascination for these buildings, which drives them to visit such places in their free time. As artists, photographers, videographers, musicians or urban explorers, they are looking for little adventures in otherwise developed urban space. Clemens Meyer tells of once illegal techno parties in industrial waste and Peter Degner from his time as a student at the former Richard Wagner High School. There are stories of unpleasant encounters with drug dealers, as well as cross golfers and graffiti artists who have discovered a new artistic freedom in the forgotten locations.

The spectrum of this documentary film series ranges from living GDR history (when thousands of people were still working in these buildings and thus fed their families), to the chimney blown in the former VEB Elguwa Leipzig by the demolition engineer Michael Schneider, or the demolition of the former Thierbach power station. Topics such as demolition, renovation, future visions and new buildings are unavoidable from a certain point in time and sealed as soon as one speaks of a lost place. Reasons and backgrounds for the redesign, myth and fascination of abandoned places are highlighted, such as the modern GPS paper chase: geocaching. Until September 2011 there was the lost place cache series “Trau Dich” in Leipzig, whose popularity reached far beyond the borders of Saxony. Thousands of people, even from surrounding countries, traveled to Leipzig to go on a treasure hunt with the GPS through the multitude of vacant buildings.

They are stories from a historical document of time that are lost if we do not preserve them by listening to the narrators. And maybe this documentary film series also offers an opportunity to grasp the historical past while shaping a future in the existing living environment.

Reviews

  • “… The result is a unique documentary film trilogy… Impressive images and a great soundtrack cast a spell over the viewer from the start… For the viewer with an interest in Lost Places, industrial culture and history, every single minute is worth watching… one of the best documentary films about Lost Places . “- Marko Reichelt, Geocaching Magazine
  • Enno Seifried is responsible for the script, direction, editing and, in part, the music, and we cannot thank him enough for this film. - Ernie LC, "BLITZ!"
  • Seifried's film is an impressive reminder of what has simply been left lying around over the past 20 years. What a gigantic waste. The film is important ... because it tells stories. - Katharina Beck, "MDR - Kino Royal!"
  • Enno Seifried from Leipzig has taken on this topic and, with “Stories behind Forgotten Walls”, has produced a documentary that not only deals superficially with Lost Places in Leipzig, but also brings its history closer and does not make us forget. - André Winternitz, "www.rottenplaces.de"
