Ghosts is an Austro-Hungarian silent film adaptation of Henrik Ibsen 's drama of the same name from 1918.

action

On the estate by a fjord in western Norway. Chamberlain Alving married Helene, but he is not so specific about loyalty. He also courted the chambermaid Regine and made her pregnant. Now Mrs. Alving is getting too colorful; she throws Regine out of the house. She fled to the carpenter Jakob Engstrand, with whom she has had a relationship for some time. Engstrand now writes Alving a letter in which he asks him to look after Regine's child. Mrs. Alving got hold of this letter one day after her unfaithful husband went insane and then died. In memory of Alving, Helene donates an asylum to bear his name. Shortly before his death, Helene fled from the meanness and brutality of her loveless husband to the house of her childhood friend Manders, who as a pastor cares for the lost souls of the community. But he did not expel her from his house in a Christian way and asked Helene to return home, since a good wife should always be by her husband's side.

Helene Alving's marriage had a son, Oswald. To protect him from the worst unreasonable demands of his father, she gave him away early. Now the child has become a young man who, after Alving's death, travels to Paris to study. He stayed there for several years, but the sins his father had committed against him cast their long shadows over Oswald's life. In the middle of a job, Oswald is thrown off course by a fit. He goes to a specialist who tells him that, like his father, he will one day go mad. The guilt of the fathers should be passed on to the sons, it is said. In the meantime, in order not to be so alone, Mrs. Alving has taken the fruit of Alving's affair, Regine Engstrand. When returning Oswald sees her, he is immediately hooked and wants to marry Regine. His mother makes it clear to him that this girl is his half-sister. Now Oswald loses all hold. He asks his mother to give him poison if he has another attack and then put an end to his miserable existence. Mrs. Alving refuses violently to this request, but when she sees how Oswald is obviously in danger of losing her mind during the subsequent attack, she complies with his request with a heavy heart.

Reviews

“This is an excellent film adaptation of the well-known drama by Henrik Ibsen. [...] The presentation of the work is extremely good. Mr. Edthofer from the Deutsches Volkstheater and Mrs. Erika v. Wagner and Grete [sic!] Haid (a sister of Liane Haid) each created a brilliant achievement for themselves. The photography is first class. "

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The material is exciting, the photos are very good. Game and the death scenes excellent. Equipment corresponding to the subject simple. "
