The striped southern insect ( Pachytrachis striolatus ) is a long- feeler insect from the subfamily of the Tettigoniinae within the superfamily of the grasshopper .

features

The striped southern cricket is similar in physique to the ornamental southern cricket , but is colored differently. The abdomen is long and thick, the pronotum is slightly elongated backwards. The long legs have black spines on the lower legs, which are stronger on the front pairs of legs and are further apart. Their antennae are longer than the body, the brown wings are tiny. The basic color is gray or gray-brown to light brown or reddish brown. The body is covered with dark drawings. Above the eye there is an irregular, dark spot reaching forward to the antennae, which is divided backwards by a light line. The pronotum lateral lobes are black with more or less blurred light spots or stripes. They have a wide, whitish border. On the upper side of the body, a broad, dark band with a light central line extends from the antennae to the rear edge of the pronotum, where it slowly dissolves. The lower thorax and the anterior abdomen are speckled diffusely dark in a row. This row of spots dissolves towards the back. The front pairs of legs have black joint regions and black speckles. The basal hind legs are black stripes, but the lines do not extend to the rear edge of the thigh. Here, too, the joint regions are darkly colored. The compound eyes are brown with a dark brown point in the middle. The male has relatively long and narrow cerci that are slightly curved inwards and not toothed. The ovipositor of the female is about body length and slightly stepped down at the tip. The striped southern insect reaches a body length of 17 to 26 millimeters.

Another species of the genus Pachytrachis occurs on the Balkan Peninsula , but this has more clearly curved cerci as males and a slightly shorter ovipositor as females.

Way of life and distribution

The striped southern cricket lives in long grassy and bushy meadows, forest edges and other habitats with a lot of vegetation. It often occurs together with the ornamental southern hedge and is often found on shrubs. Its distribution area extends from Albania via Serbia and Montenegro , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia and Slovenia to South Tyrol and the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . It is missing in Austria and Germany . The adults occur from July to October.
