The striped rainbow fish ( Chilatherina fasciata , Syn . : Rhombatractus fasciatus Weber, 1913 , Chilatherina fasciata Regan, 1914 ) is a freshwater fish species from the rainbow fish family (Melanotaeniidae). It occurs in northern New Guinea between the Merkaham and Mamberamo rivers . The species is the type species of the genus Chilatherina .
features
The striped rainbow fish has a relatively high-backed, laterally strongly flattened body and becomes up to 12 cm long. The head is relatively pointed, the eyes strikingly large. With increasing age, the body shape becomes higher back, especially in males. The back and the flanks are brownish to blue-green, the scales clearly visible through a light, yellowish edge. Both dorsal fins and the caudal fin are dark and often have a black border. In the males, the base of the pelvic fins and the anal fin are yellowish, their edges black. In the females, the fin bases are transparent, the edge sooty gray. The vertical stripes indicated in the species epithet fasciata on the front sides of the fish (Latin fasciatus = "striped") also occurs in other species of the genus Chilatherina, mainly refers to dead specimens soaked in alcohol and rarely occurs in living fish and only temporarily.
- Fin formula : dorsal 1 IV-VII, dorsal 2 I / 11–16, anal I / 21–28, pectoral 14–16.
habitat
The striped rainbow fish occurs in lowland waters as well as in streams and rivers in hilly terrain up to heights of 400 to 500 meters. The rainbow fish Chilatherina crassispinosa and Melanotaenia affinis are found in the same habitat ; the striped rainbow fish lives syntopically with the Wanam rainbow fish ( Glossolepis wanamensis ) in Lake Wanam .
