The common Turkish bell ( Michauxia campanuloides ) is a species of the genus Michauxia . The generic name honors André Michaux (1746–1802), a French botanist, plant collector and explorer.
features
The common Turkish bell is a biennial or perennial but only one blooming ( hapaxanthe ) plant that reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 (rarely up to 2) meters. It forms a turnip . The rosette leaves and the lower stem leaves are pinnate or lobed , toothed and hairy. The stem is thick, erect and hirsute. The flowers are arranged in a florid panicle or raceme . The crown has a diameter of 8 centimeters. It is divided into 8 to 10 ribbon-shaped, bent-back sections almost to the bottom. These are 1 centimeter wide and 25 to 40 millimeters long. They are colored white and overflowed with purple on the outside. The calyx has appendages between the tips. The stylus are 2 to 4 inches long.
The flowering period extends from July to August.
Occurrence
The common Turkish bell occurs in southern and central Turkey, in western Syria and in Israel on rock bases at altitudes of 10 to 1700 meters.

The common Turkish bell is rarely used as an ornamental plant for borders and rock gardens. It has been in culture since 1787 at the latest.
