Giões is a town and municipality in the Algarve in southern Portugal .
history
The excavations of a fortified settlement from the 8th century date from the Arab period. The settlement emerged in connection with the local copper mine, which was operated by the Moors from the 8th to at least the 11th century . Smaller mines were operated in the municipality until the 19th century.
Giões has been an independent municipality since the 16th century.
