Giacomo Stefano Oreglia

Giacomo Stefano Oreglia (born June 23, 1924 in Mondovì ; † November 9, 2007 in Stockholm ) was an Italian publisher , translator of Swedish literature into Italian.

In the obituary of his hometown he is described as a leading cultural mediator between Italy and Sweden.

Career

In 1948 he received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Turin . In 1949 he emigrated to Stockholm. In 1974 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University . In 1964 he published a monograph on Commedia dell'arte and in 1993 a biography of Dante Alighieri . Until 1983 Oreglia was a lecturer in literary and theater history at the Italian cultural institute in Stockholm, after which he moved to Stockholm University . In 2004 he was awarded by the Swedish Academy.

The Swedish writers he translated into Italian included August Strindberg, Gunnar Ekelöf, Erik Lindegren, Eyvind Johnson, Harry Martinson, Lars Forssell, and Tomas Tranströmer.
