The Giardiinae are a subgroup of unicellular flagellates of the Diplomonadida . This includes 44 species in three genera, all of which live parasitically in vertebrates. Giardia intestinalis , the causative agent of Giardiasis, is of particular importance for humans .

Features and way of life

A distinguishing (diagnostic) feature from the sister group, the Hexamitinae , is the lack of a cell mouth . A flagella emerges from each kinetide at the rear end , which previously runs through the cell along its entire length in the cytoplasm .

All species of the Giardiinae are parasites and live as endobionts in amphibians , rodents , birds and mammals .

Systematics

The group was first described in 1978 as a subfamily of a family Hexamitidae by Eva Nohynkova and Jaroslav Kulda . Adl et al. lead them - like all taxa - as without rank, but place them directly as a subgroup of the Diplomonadida without the superordinate Hexamitidae. The internal system is undisputed, the group comprises three genera with a total of 44 species, of which 41 are Giardia species:
