Gibbston is a small settlement in the Queenstown-Lakes District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The settlement is located in the Gibbston Valley , part of the Wakatipu Basin , around 23 km east of Queenstown . Through the valley flows Kawarau River and runs New Zealand State Highway 6 , of Queenstown with Chromwell connects. To the south rises the mountain range of The Remarkables .

economy

In the area in and around Gibbston vineyard is operated and is considered the coolest and highest vineyards Central Otago s . Most of the cultivated areas are sloping slightly to the north, the resulting increased solar radiation promotes growth and reduces the risk of frost, which is nevertheless a significant risk in the cultivation region.

Gibbston is often called Gibbston Flats as it is the only commercially usable flat land in the Kawarau Gorge .

Gibbston is part of the Kawarau Gorge . The Kawerau Bridge , where bungee jumping was offered for the first time, is located near the village .

Gibbston won the 2011 national title of " Community of the year ". The decisive factor here was the work on the Gibbston River Trail , part of the Queenstown Trail bike and hiking trail .
