history

The club was founded in 1923 as a swimming club. In 1947 amateur players set up a table tennis department under the umbrella of the Hessian table tennis association HTTV . This was joined by some active members of the Spielvereinigung 1900 Gießen (today VfB 1900 Gießen ) club. Department head was Heinz Gerbig, who was replaced by Fritz Neumann-Spengel († 1964) at the end of 1947. At first there were only men's teams. With the establishment of a youth department in 1950, the promotion of the next generation was intensified. In the mid-1950s there were newcomers from the neighboring club Spielvereinigung 1900, because the table tennis department there was dissolved. During this time there was also a women's team.

In 1964 Paul Ullschmied became head of the department. A year later, almost all of the active members of the Grün-Weiß Gießen club moved to Gießener SV, which led to a concentration of performance and made the club one of the largest members in Hessen. Nina Hess (* 1912; † 1985) took over the department management around 1980. She had previously taken care of the ladies intensively. Starting in the mid-1980s, there was a sharp decline in members and players. Hans Hackenberg, who has headed the department since 1985, initiated constant reorganization.

Women's team

Under the supervision of Nina Hess, the women became champions of the Oberliga Südwest, the top German division at the time, in the 1971/72 season. So they rose to the newly founded two-part women's Bundesliga . In the South / Southwest group, they immediately took second place. They finished fourth for the next two years. So they were qualified for the newly introduced one-piece Bundesliga 1975/76.

The other placements:

  • 1975/76 8th place
  • 1976/77 4th place
  • 1977/78 7th place
  • 1978/79 8th place
  • 1979/80 5th place
  • 1980/81 8th place
  • 1981/82 place 10

The last place at the end of the 1981/82 season meant relegation to the second division. Because of several departures from high performers, the team was relegated again in the following season. It played in the Hessenliga until 1990, then the women's team disbanded.
