Giant grave Su Picante

The buildings mentioned in Sardu Tumbas de sos zigantes and ( Italian Tombe dei Giganti ) (plur.) Are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . Most of the 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2,200–1,600 BC), the forerunner of the nuragic culture .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and monolithic exedra are of the older type. In later systems, the exedra consists of a rectangular façade made of processed and layered stone blocks instead of monolithic blocks .

description

The giant grave Su Picante belongs to the orthostatic graves, although few original parts of the exedra have survived . It consists of a rectangular chamber part made of blocks arranged in rows, which is covered by only partially protruding plates. Twelve orthostats are still preserved in situ from the front of the exedra . Remains of a kind of wall that supported the imposing mound are preserved on the back. Generally, graves of this type are identified by a portal stele in the center of the arched exedra. No trace was found here of this element, which is often the only one to be found in other systems. It cannot therefore be ruled out that in this case there was another solution at the entrance. The tomb does not have a perfectly regular structure as it follows the contour of the rock floor with sloping protruding elements.

Based on the materials, the system dates from the Middle Bronze Age , more precisely from the Sa-Turricula phase of the Bonnanaro culture.

The archaeological site of Su Notante with its fountain sanctuary is located on the slopes of Monte e 'Senes near Irgoli.
