Giant tomb of Paddeu

The giant tomb of Paddeu ( Italian Tomba dei giganti di Paddeu - also called Su Truppu) is located under an overhead line , north of Cossoine in the province of Sassari in Sardinia .

The buildings called "Tumbas de los zigantes" in Sardu are the largest prenuraghic cult structures in Sardinia and are among the latest megalithic structures in Europe . The 321 known giant tombs are monuments of the Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture (2200 to 1600 BC), which is the forerunner of the nuragic culture .

Type sequence

Structurally, giant tombs appear in two variants. The systems with portal steles and exedra are of the older type. In the later complexes, the exedra consists instead of monolithic steles , of a square facade, significantly raised in the middle, made of processed, layered stone blocks. The giant grave of Paddeu belongs to the older type (with portal steles).

The gallery of large panels of the unusually short giant tomb has largely been preserved, while the exedra is completely missing. Only part of the portal stele is on the front area of the gallery. The oversized slab at the end of the gallery is likely to be the other part of the portal stele that was erected out of place.

The Byzantine Church of Santa Maria Iscalas and the giant tomb of Aidu are nearby .
