Gilda Langer
Hermengild "Gilda" Langer (born May 16, 1896 in Priwoz ; † January 31, 1920 in Berlin ) was a German silent film and theater actress .
Life
Langer came to acting in 1915 through the acquaintance of the Austrian screenwriter Carl Mayer , who took her from Vienna to Berlin. Mayer became a dramaturge at the Berlin Residenztheater , and Langer got an engagement as an actress there. At the side of Conrad Veidt and Harry Liedtke she played in 1918 in The Riddle of Bangalor . In 1919 she received a contract with the film production company Decla Film , where Fritz Lang was also under contract, who made three films with her in the same year.
Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz wrote the script for Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari and saw Langer in the female lead. Decla bought the script and the film was to be made in 1920. Langer was now engaged to the director Paul Czinner and at the end of January 1920 fell ill with the Spanish flu , which spread to a lung infection. The actress died on January 31, 1920 at the age of 23. The female lead in Dr. Caligari received Lil Dagover . Langer's grave is located in the south-west cemetery Stahnsdorf near Berlin.
