The Gillette Castle State Park is a 74-hectare park area between Lyme and East Haddam on the border of counties Middlesex and New London in the State of Connecticut . Gillette Castle, also known as the Seventh Sister , was built there between 1914 and 1919 . In 1943, the state acquired the property and established a state park . Since July 31, 1986, the building has been on the National Register of Historic Places under number 86002103.
Gillette Castle in Lyme , overlooking the Connecticut River , was originally the private residence of actor William Gillette .
Gillette, best known as the stage actor of Sherlock Holmes , designed the castle-like peculiar house on his Seventh Sister estate essentially himself. When he died without a link, the State of Connecticut took over the property and made it a state park, which is now visited by around 300,000 people annually becomes.
The peculiarities of the house include special door knobs and locks and a secret passage and hidden surveillance mirrors.
A once-existing private railway was largely dismantled.
