Gillian Tans (born August 2, 1970 in Apeldoorn ) is a Dutch business manager and has been the chief executive officer of the Dutch company Booking.com since 2016 .

Training and career beginnings

Gillian Tans graduated from the hotel management school in Middelburg / Netherlands . During this time she also did a hotel internship in the Allgäu . She began her professional career at "Hershey Entertainment and Resorts" in Hershey (Pennsylvania) , an American hotel company and operator of amusement parks. She then worked for the hotel group "Golden Tulip Worldwide Hotel Group" for four years, initially as a product manager and then as sales director. She also worked for the InterContinental Hotels Group in various locations. In addition to Dutch, she speaks fluent English, German and French.

Careers at Booking.com

In 2002, Gillian Tans joined the company Booking.com in Amsterdam , founded in 1996 as the fifth employee at the time, which at the time only had a small office in Amsterdam and was just opening a second office in Barcelona . Her position was called "Director Hotels & Content", she agreed partnership agreements with hotels and hotel groups, with the aim of organizing room sales via the booking.com internet platform as an additional sales channel for hotel operators. The company developed very successfully, and in 2011 she was appointed Chief Operating Officer . Four years later she was named president of the company. Her responsibility included the development and implementation of the corporate strategy and brand management. In 2016, the parent company, which at that time still bore the name "Priceline Group", surprisingly split from the then CEO Darren Huston and transferred this position to Gillian Tans. She is also a member of the management of the parent company "Booking Holdings" based in Norwalk , Connecticut / USA .

Today (2019) Booking.com operates 198 offices in 70 countries, 8 of them in Germany. The website contains 144,000 destinations in 229 countries. Booking.com describes itself as a technology leader. The booking.com website has 43 language versions. 1.5 million overnight stays are arranged every day.

Gillian Tans enjoys special media attention due to her professional success and as a woman in a top position. In addition, Booking.com is one of the few European Internet companies with a global growth history and has a dominant global market position in its field. Gillian Tans is married and has three children.
