Giorgio Nardone (born September 13, 1958 in Arezzo ) is an Italian psychologist and psychotherapist . In 1987 he founded the Centro di Terapia Strategica (Center for Strategic Therapy) in Arezzo together with Paul Watzlawick . He is a lecturer in technology of short-term therapy within the postgraduate training in clinical psychology at the University of Siena and the author of numerous works that have been translated into several languages and are dedicated to the general public.

Stations of his work

Giorgio Nardone studied philosophy at the University of Siena, where he also received his doctorate. At this institute he continued his research with the investigation of the epistemology of clinical psychology and different therapy models ("Lo studio dell'epistemologia della psicologia clinica e dei vari modelli di psicoterapia").

Nardone was very interested in the studies and theories of the School of Palo Alto, also known as the Palo Alto Group . His special focus was on the works of Paul Watzlawick , Don D. Jackson , Janet H. Beavin, John H. Weakland and the group of the Mental Research Institute (MRI). In 1982 he applied for a scholarship abroad and spends a year with the researchers at the MRI, whose approach to the study of mind and problem solving was based not on a medical or psychiatric tradition but on the approach of logic, anthropology, philosophy and arose from studying communication. After returning to Italy, he specialized in psychology. He also spent several months a year in Palo Alto, where he began to adapt the knowledge he acquired there to Italian conditions.

During this time he began working with Paul Watzlawick. In 1987 they jointly founded the Centro di Terapia Strategica (the Italian Mental Research Institute) in Arezzo and two years later the School for Strategic Therapy. Together they also developed the strategic brief therapy, which became a psychotherapeutic orientation. This form of therapy resulted from different approaches such as second-order cybernetics , constructivist philosophy , systemic therapy , Milton Erickson's hypnotherapy , the strategic approach of the MRI in Palo Alto and the art of stratagems of ancient China. The innovative thing about the strategic short therapy consisted in the creation of specific treatment protocols for the different pathologies.

Therapeutic approach

Nardone first describes his therapeutic approach to strategic short therapy in The Art of Change: Strategic Therapy and Hypnotherapy Without Trance (1990), which he wrote together with Paul Watzlawick (the German edition was published in 1994 by Hans Huber Verlag under the title Irrwege, Detours and ways out). This therapy finds the philosophical basis - as already mentioned - in (radical) constructivism : It is assumed here that people build their own reality and thus also determine the way in which this construct can be disturbed. The principle is: every person has their own system of perception of reality and therefore reacts to it individually. Working out this system of perception / reaction of the patient is one of the first steps in therapy.

Like the systemic approach, strategic therapy is based on the here and now and not on the patient's past, as is the case with therapies with a psychodynamic orientation. One does not look for the supposed cause of the problem, since this approach assumes that knowing about it does not resolve the symptom or the patient's general problems. In contrast, one tries to find out what the patient has developed up to that point in order to solve his problem. From these “attempted solutions” it is possible to work out what prevents change. For example, if you look at a person who suffers from agoraphobia , the solution to the problem is to close yourself in the house and not step outside the door. The patient himself, regardless of which symptom he now has, naturally considers his own solution to be effective. Perhaps it has been effective in the past or has simply helped him avoid addressing the problem. But by sticking to these inefficient solutions, he is actually maintaining the problem.

After the system of perception / reaction of the person concerned and their possible solutions have been worked out, “tasks” are assigned to them that the patient must carry out very conscientiously. In order to be sure of his cooperation, a suggestive language is used in the therapy, which is based on the hypnotherapy according to Milton Erickson.

The prescriptions or strategies may seem strange, bizarre, or paradoxical, but they are never immoral, dangerous, or costly. The underlying idea is the creation of a "corrective emotional experience" as described in 1946 by the psychoanalyst Franz Alexander in his book Psychoanalytic Therapy: Principles and Application (Ronald Press). In short, by applying the prescribed strategy, first on an emotional and then on a cognitive level, the patient is enabled to try out a new, different reality than the one he had previously built up. This experience becomes the starting point for a change and thus for the solution of his problem. So not only is the symptom cured, but you work to the point at which the person affected develops a deeper change in perception and thus the reaction.

As the name "short therapy" suggests, the treatment time of a therapy is relatively short (less than 20 and an average of 7 sessions). With the exception of the second, which takes place every week, the appointments take place every two weeks. If the problem has already been solved, follow-ups follow one to two months apart. Each session has a predetermined duration, ranging from 20–50 minutes. In any case, the therapy is tailored to the individual patient and his / her characteristics.

The center's internal studies show that the therapy has a success rate of 86%. Nonetheless, the most common criticism of this therapy is that the strategic approach is superficial and exclusively symptomatological and also not capable of producing radical and lasting change.

Centro di Terapia Strategica - the therapy center

At the Centro di Terapia Stratecica, which Nardone founded together with Paul Watzlawick, mental disorders are both treated and researched. It is shaped mainly by Nardone's empirical study of psychotherapy, in which he evaluates the different strategies of his approach according to effect and efficiency.

Around 100 practices in Italy and others in Europe, America and Australia are attached to the center. In addition to the therapy, these practices also make a contribution to advancing the research of the center.

Associazione Nardone-Watzlawick onlus - the Nardone-Watzlawick Society

In 2007 the Associazione Nardone-Watzlawick (the Nardone-Watzlawick Society) was established, a facility with headquarters in Arezzo, which offers free psychotherapeutic, rehabilitative and advisory services. Psychologists, psychotherapists and consultants trained in short-term strategic therapy work here as a non-profit.
