Giovan Francesco di Palma Mormanno (* in the 15th century in Naples ; † 1572 there ) was an organ builder , architect and painter. He was mainly active in Naples.

Life and works

Giovan Francesco di Palma Mormanno was a son of Giustino di Palma and from around 1505 a pupil of Giovanni Donadio , whose nickname Mormanno or Mormando he took over. In 1526 he married his daughter Diana. Donadio must have died around this time and Mormanno worked as an organ builder with Alessandro Raimondi and Nicola de Spellis . From 1539 he worked with Andrea Scoppa , from 1546 also with Giustino de Palma .

Mormanno and his respective partners built and painted various organs, including 1539 for the cathedral in Potenza , the church of S. Maria dei Martin in Maranola near Gaeta and the Neapolitan churches of Spirito Santo, S. Maria di Costaninopoli and S. Gregorio Armene (1541 ). In 1545 the organ was added for the church in Pescocostanzo and in 1546 one for the church in Facto in Capitanata , in 1547 the organ for the monastery of S. Francesco in Cava , and in 1548 one for the cathedral of Naples - the first large organ in this church - and in the following years organs for the churches of S. Cbiara, S. Lorenzo, S. Maria dei Pignatelli, S. Angelo a Nilo, S. Domenico and S. Maria Maddalena, the latter in 1558.

Thieme / Becker attested Mormanno less architectural ability than his father-in-law, whose work he continued. In 1532 Mormanno built the Torrione at the Porta S. Gennaro, in 1535 his own house followed, which was opposite S. Gregorio Armeno, and in the same year S. Maria Donna Romita. In 1537 SS. Severino e Sossio was completed, in 1540 the palace of Alfonso de Turri near Castel Capuano . In the mid-1540s he completed the palace in Piazza S. Domenico and the casino of a villa for Cos. Pinelli. The Choir of S. Patrizia followed in 1547 and the Palazzo Gravina in the following years. At an advanced age Mormanno created the portals for S. Maria d. Grazie a Caponapoli and for S. Gaudioso (1560), in 1561 he expanded the monastery of S. Maria Donna Regina, in 1563 that of S. Maria Donnalbína and in 1570 the buildings of S. Pietro Martire and S. Maria Regina Coeli.

From about 1561 to 1570 he belonged to the Tribunale della Mattonata as an architect; this authority was responsible for public works, in particular for road construction. His sons Giulio Cesare and Giovanni Andrea continued his work.
